During its first meeting on 31 February 2006 in Reutlingen, the founding members came together around the vision of Susan Tatah to establish a non-profit, membership-based organization dedicated to promoting African culture and community engagement. The members agreed to support the creation of a non-profit association (gemeinnützig) under German law, adopting the legal form of a registered association (e.V.)
The association was officially approved in September 2006, and its first Board of Administration was constituted. An Executive Committee was subsequently established from among the founding members:

To ensure democratic, transparent, and effective decision-making, the association is composed of the following bodies:
Members form the foundation of AfrikAktiv e.V., actively participating in and benefiting from its platforms, programmes, and initiatives.
Provides strategic direction, oversight, and governance, ensuring that the organization remains aligned with its mission and legal obligations.
Responsible for the operational management and implementation of projects, programmes, and day-to-day activities.
Members are expected to actively contribute to the organization’s mission and activities, particularly through:
Institutional members are expected to hold legal status in their respective countries.
Individuals who wish to contribute to the vision and activities of AfrikAktiv can join as Supporting Members, offering their time, expertise, or resources to strengthen the organization and its flagship initiatives, including the festival.
The General Assembly is held once a year, typically during the festival period, serving as a key platform for reporting, decision-making, and member engagement. Additional ad hoc meetings may be convened as needed.
